SENATE NEWS ? Ekiti AI Innovation Centre Bill Scales Second Reading in Senate

Abuja, Nigeria - The bill seeking to establish the Artificial Intelligence (AI), Innovation, and Communication Technology Solutions Centre in Omuo-Ekiti, Ekiti State, has successfully passed its second reading on the floor of the Nigerian Senate.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Adeyemi Adaramodu (Ekiti South), aims to position Nigeria as a key player in the global digital economy by establishing a dedicated national hub for research and development in Artificial Intelligence and other frontier technologies.

Key Objectives of the Proposed Centre

During the debate, Senator Adaramodu emphasized the strategic importance of the centre, stressing that nations failing to invest in AI and digital innovation risk being left behind in the 21st-century knowledge economy.

The proposed centre in Omuo-Ekiti is expected to serve several critical functions:

  • Research and Innovation: Promote advanced research in AI, robotics, data science, and other related fields.

  • Skills Development: Equip young Nigerians with cutting-edge digital and AI-based skills to enhance their global competitiveness for employment and entrepreneurship.

  • National Solutions: Develop homegrown digital solutions to address local challenges in sectors like agriculture, healthcare, education, and public service delivery.

  • Collaboration: Foster strategic partnership among government, academia, and the private industry.

The Strategic Choice of Ekiti State

Senator Adaramodu described the choice of Ekiti State as "strategic," noting the state's long-standing reputation as a "cradle of education and intellectual excellence." He argued that establishing the centre there would not only stimulate research but also catalyse economic growth across the South-West region and the entire country.

Following the extensive debate, which garnered wide support from lawmakers across party lines, the bill was read for the second time. It has now been referred to the Senate Committee on Science, Technology, and Innovation for further legislative work, including public hearings, before being reported back to the plenary session for consideration and a potential third reading.
