When governments shut down, as we’ve seen recently in America, it’s a stark reminder that systems can pause—but people cannot afford to. Unlike institutions, our shutdowns come at a human cost. If we ever reach a point where the people must halt their participation in society to make a statement, it must be more than symbolic. It must be strategic. There must be a plan, a purpose, and a pathway forward. We cannot afford to shut down just to prove a point. We must shut down to pivot—to build something better, more just, more sustainable. That means crafting a blueprint for what comes next. It means imagining and implementing a new normal that reflects our values, our unity, and our vision for the future.
