Breaking Barriers in Entrepreneurship: Meet Johnny Gray III, Founder of D&J Builders Surplus

America’s First and Only Black-Owned Iron Door Store, Meet the Entrepreneur Who Owns ItIn a remarkable tale of perseverance and determination, Johnny Gray III has shattered glass ceilings in the business world by becoming the founder of America's first and only Black-owned iron door store. With a decade-long journey marked by setbacks, rejections, and unwavering commitment, Gray's story serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.

A Journey of Resilience
Gray's entrepreneurial journey began in 2000 when he launched an air conditioning and heating company. Over the years, he gained valuable experience in construction, remodeling, fire restoration, roofing, foundation repair, and several other business ventures. While some businesses flourished, others faltered, but each experience strengthened his knowledge and prepared him for the opportunity he had been searching for.

The Vision Takes Shape
Gray's long-term vision was to establish a building products showroom that would serve customers nationwide with luxury iron doors, interior doors, garage doors, windows, security products, and home improvement solutions. However, turning this vision into reality proved far more challenging than expected. For years, Gray worked tirelessly to secure supplier relationships, inventory, and access to products that many manufacturers and distributors were unwilling to sell to him.

The Breakthrough
After nearly a decade of perseverance, Gray's hard work finally paid off on April 5, 2023, when D&J Builders Surplus received its first shipment of iron doors. Shortly after, the company officially opened for business, marking a significant milestone in Gray's journey. Today, the company continues to expand across the United States while serving customers seven days a week.

Lessons from the Journey
Gray emphasizes that opening a business is not the finish line but rather the starting point for new challenges and responsibilities. He encourages aspiring entrepreneurs to remain committed to their vision, continue fighting for what they want, and recognize that lasting success often built one challenge at a time. Gray's story serves as a reminder that sometimes the door you're trying to open takes years to unlock, and the people who ultimately succeed are often those who refuse to walk away.

Johnny Gray III's remarkable journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and determination in achieving success. As a shining example of entrepreneurial spirit, his story inspires us to stay committed to our goals, even when faced with rejection or setbacks. With D&J Builders Surplus continuing to grow and expand, Gray's legacy serves as a beacon of hope for generations of entrepreneurs to come.
