American Held Captive for a Year in Afghanistan

American Dennis Coyle marks 1 year of detention in AfghanistanAs the world marks one year since his abduction, the family of American Dennis Coyle is still searching for answers. Coyle, a 64-year-old academic from Colorado, was taken by force from his Kabul apartment by the Taliban just six days after another American, Ryan Corbett, was released.

A Year in Captivity
Coyle's family says he is being held in near-solitary confinement with no charges filed. His abduction highlights the ongoing risks faced by Americans in Afghanistan, even those with long-standing legal status and deep ties to local communities.

A Complex Situation
The Taliban and the United States remain in contact, with former U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad visiting Kabul earlier this month. However, a senior Taliban official told CBS News that 'we are very clear that we will not offer any further goodwill gestures.'

A New Designation
In September, the Trump administration created the State Sponsor of Wrongful Detention designation to target countries or groups that hold Americans without legal justification. Modeled after the state sponsors of terrorism designation, this measure would give the State Department authority to impose sanctions and restrictions on nationals of designated countries.

A Family's Plea
Coyle's family has launched FreeDennisCoyle.com to coordinate advocacy and share updates. They are calling for his release, citing his long-standing ties to the local community and the lack of charges filed against him.

As the world marks one year since Dennis Coyle's abduction, his family remains hopeful that he will be released soon. The situation highlights the complexities of international relations and the ongoing risks faced by Americans in Afghanistan.
